Bakersfield Memorial Hospital began through a citizen campaign led by civic leaders and healthcare professionals, which culminated in the opening of Greater Bakersfield Memorial Hospital in 1956. The hospital's centers of excellence include the Central California Heart Institute, Certified Stroke Center, Heart Center, Neurological services and its Family Care Center including a level II Neonatal intensive Care Unit.
