Originally named Merced Community Medical Center, the Community Campus of Mercy Medical Center Merced evolved from a small, one-story wooden building erected in 1853 and was designed to care for the county's poor and indigent populations. In 2001 the hospital affiliated with Mercy Hospital and Health Services to form a bi-campus facility. Today, the hospitals are known for the Mercy Cancer Center, the Mercy Surgical and Diagnostic Center, and their obstetric services and children's unit.
