St. Mary Medical Center was originally called the Long Beach Sanitarium and was owned by a local physician. In 1923, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word bought the facility and expanded services, building a new hospital in 1937. A regional teaching hospital for the UCLA School of Medicine, the hospital is known for the St. Mary Heart Institute, St. Mary Cancer Care Center, Breast Center and Trauma Center.
