Our Medical Director, Brad K. Moy, M.D. has practiced Occupational Medicine for over 20 years. In 2003 he accepted the position as Medical Director of our Occupational Health Centers
As an avid golfer and sports enthusiast, Dr. Moy believes in the importance of keeping our bodies active. Maintaining an active lifestyle carries into his Occupational Health philosophy of treating injured workers as he believes that, ”Modified work facilitates the healing process."
Why? According to Dr. Moy, “By temporarily adjusting work tasks and activities until an injured body part heals it is important to help other muscle groups stay toned and active. During the healing process, we work with the patient to gradually increase the work activities until the employee is ready to return to full duties. These incremental adjustments give an injured worker’s body the time it needs to continue to be productive and, ultimately, return to peak performance.
Dr. Moy has worked and acted as Medical Director at other Occupational Health facilities and rehabilitation centers. Patients will find Dr. Moy at the Saint Francis Health Center at the Ballpark and the Franciscan Treatment Room across from the hospital.
Personal Profile: Dr. Moy was born in Manhattan, New York and lived in Hong Kong for 13 years. He is bi-lingual and bi-cultural. He spends his leisure time golfing and has completed a triathlon (Olympic distance). Dr. Moy graduated from the University of San Francisco with a Bachelor of Science degree and continued with his graduate school studies at San Francisco State University. Dr. Brad Maring has been in the field of Occupational Medicine for over 20 years and joined Saint Francis Memorial in January of 1987.
Dr. Maring served as our Occupational Health Medical Director for 15 years. In short, he has a long history of restoring injured workers back to good health and deeply caring about the healing process from beginning to end.
His extensive training in Emergency Medicine gives him the ability to triage patients more effectively if urgency of care levels are required. Dr. Maring is very focused on the importance of communication particularly with the complicated regulations in the state of California. He believes that communication is our “strong suit” as Occupational Health providers. There is a lot of scrutiny in this profession – more so than any other field – and that’s why it is so important to keep the patient, employer and the insurer in the circle of information.
Personal Profile: Although Dr. Maring was born in Galesburg, Illinois he kept his heart in San Francisco since moving here in 1986. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Drake University with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in psychology. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Iowa’s College of Medicine garnering Honors in Pediatrics and Pathology. Dr. Maring is also actively Board certified in Emergency Medicine.
Saint Francis honored Dr. Maring with the Community Outreach Award for his work with the needle exchange project. For over 10 years, he has volunteered with the HIV Prevention Project also honored by Saint Francis. He is very passionate about giving back to the community and, in particular, our immediate neighbors in the Tenderloin.
Dr. Maring is also passionate about travel and physical fitness. When he isn’t globe trotting…he is climbing! He has a goal to hike all 54 peaks in Colorado that are 14,000 ft. known as the “14ers.” He is well on his way to accomplishing that goal as in 2007 he hiked No. 50!
Mr. Johnson, our board certified Physician Assistant, has provided care to injured workers for more than 25 years.
As a result, he has worked with a variety of Bay Area employers and has developed strong working relationships with supervisors, adjusters, attorneys and risk managers throughout the industry.
Tom focuses exclusively on the primary and specialist care of injured workers partnering closely with our physicians and physical therapists for 360° care. When asked about his role on the Occupational Health team, Tom shares three aspects on his approach. He feels that “compassionate care, claim control and communication are central to the skills he brings as a provider. In Workers’ Compensation there are many parties that connect to each work-related injury and successful outcome. Each person injured on the job is a special case and the follow-through on a personal level is important.”
Over the years, he has taught courses on case management strategies to adjusters and lectured at the Stanford University Physician Assistant Program.
Personal Profile: Tom was born in Los Angeles and grew up in the Bay Area. He earned his Bachelors Degree from UC Berkeley in Neurobiology and received his clinical training at Yale University. He enjoys traveling to Asia and building homes in Mexico for needy families. Barbecuing and playing golf with friends and family are his favorite pastimes.
