Making a difference means looking for solutions inside and outside our hospitals' walls. That's why, in addition to our efforts to reform the healthcare system we are using our rights as a shareholder in other large companies to encourage ethical business practices that support healthy communities.
Through dialogue with corporate management, education, proxy voting, and shareholder resolutions at annual meetings, we address many issues of social and environmental concern:
- Recognizing the link between poverty and poor health, we work with financial institutions to expand access to capital for minorities and low income individuals and families.
- To promote access to prescription drugs for the uninsured or underinsured, we advanced a policy of price restraint at major pharmaceutical companies.
- We also foster workplace diversity by urging our portfolio companies to initiate and report on efforts to recruit, retain, and promote women and persons of color.
